Pop Music Bubblegum Kings: Where Are They Now?
Pop music bubblegum kings have a history that traces back to the 80s when groups like the New Kids on the Block, and New Edition became rather popular with audiences. In essence, these were the first boy bands to hit the scene. The term didnt quite catch on until pop music of the 90s became saturated with numerous male groups, such as the Backstreet Boys, NSYNC and MTVs own, O-Town. Today, while pop princesses dictate the airwaves, it brings one to ponder, where have all the American bubblegum pop music kings gone?
Backstreet Boys
You may not know this, but the pop music sensation in the 90s, the Backstreet Boys, are still alive and kicking and planning the release of a new album. The group, minus Kevin Richardson, has made a transition from their teen pop roots to more of a pop rock group. They now play their own instruments to supply their background music.
Through the middle of the 90s and 2000s, the Backstreet Boys enjoyed raging success across the world, provoking teenage girls to swoon at the very mention of their names. In the era of boy bands, they still hold the title of selling more albums than any other collaboration. Sadly, throughout the years, many of the group members have experienced personal ups and downs.
In 2001, member, AJ McLean, who had always been viewed as the bad boy of the quintet, became increasingly destructive. It was apparent that he was struggling with a few issues in his life, namely alcohol and drugs. In 2003, McLean made an appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show with his mother. It was then that fellow group members arrived on air to show their support for him. They hadnt been together for about two years before this reunion.
Member Nick Carter gained brief attention for dating the infamous Paris Hilton for about a year. That ended in 2004 and all he got was a lousy Paris tattoo out of the deal, which he promptly exchanged for a skull and cross bones. In May of 2006, member, Brian Littrell released his first solo project, Welcome Home, which made a respected showing on the Billboard Christian Charts.
NSYNC
Feverishly trying to catch up with the popular Backstreet Boys, NSYNC enjoyed an admirable amount of success with numerous pop music hits. Shifting from teen pop to dance pop, the group had a nice run from 1995 to 2002. As of now, only two of the five original band members have produced solo albums: JC Chasez and the unforgettable Justin Timberlake. Additional group members included: Lance Bass, Joey Fatone and Chris Kirkpatrick.
As of now, Joey Fatone has made a showing in numerous movie projects (My Big Fat Greek Wedding), in some of which he has worked with Lance Bass, who spends most of his time dealing with his film production company projects. Recently, he has admitted to his homosexual lifestyle and, currently, is even dating a former Survivor cast member. Kirkpatrick on the other hand has joined another band and has been playing live shows in California.
98 Degrees
Although Nick Lachey is better known for being the former husband of Jessica Simpson, he was first recognized as a member of the pop music boy band, 98 Degrees, along with his brother, Drew, Jeff Timmons and Justin Jeffre. The group emerged on the scene in 1997, dabbling in pop, R&B and bubblegum pop. To date, the only solo projects produced by members of 98 Degrees have come from Nick Lachey (2003 and 2006) and Jeff Timmons (2004).
The group has been relatively quiet in terms of mainstream recognition, but a new album is in the works with brand new material to enjoy. Unlike other pop music groups, they intend to stick with what worked for them in the past.

A society type question?
Im not sure if im putting this question in the right place, but I was not gonna put it in the Entertainment and Music section because all people do in that section is bash and I really dont need answers like that. So anyways Im 13 and Im always getting made fun of for listening to ‘bubblegum pop’ like Demi Lovato, the Jonas Brothers, Selena Gomez and so on (but not Miley Cyrus because I hate her.) Anyways so im always getting fun of listening to them or even liking them, and people are always telling me ‘ you dont know what good music is!’. And I just wanna know why people are SO mean and rude! Like honestly something people who say those things obviously dont think about the fact that ‘bubblegum pop’ isnt ALL i listen to. I can go anywhere from Jonas Brothers to 3OH!3, or Selena Gomez to Papa Roach.
I am a very rock fan, and it really gets to me when people say I dont know what real music is just because I listen to a certain artist. Because I do, and honestly what is real music? Everyone’s idea of ‘real music’ differs. Whats been bugging me lately is this whole Micheal Jackson thing, I mean i have respect for him and everything, but people just go too far with him. His superfans bash on anybody who isnt a superfan of his, and I understand this because he has the best selling album of all time and he was an icon that changed the world in many ways but that doesnt mean I have to think he was the ‘King Of Pop’. He didnt do anything for me, he didnt help me get through problems I was having. People just express their feelings to harsh now a days and wasnt Micheal a VERY peaceful, loving person? So why are his fan being so rude and mean and negative to others? What has our society turned into? Sorry this was so long, and I know this probably sounds like a rant, and it kind of is but i ranted so you guys would understand where im coming from..So please just answer with an answer on why you think this world is the way it is? And along those lines, I dont know if this was the right place to put this, but please I dont want any slamming.
Please&Thanks ahead of time:)
lyrics are what I look for in songs, I dont care if its a crap song or its an absolutely amazing song, as long as I can relate to what the artist is talking about, I like the song!:)
Thank you so much for all your answers they are really helpful!:)
I honestly can not choose a best answer!
Let me leave it to voting. Because to everyone who answered seriously helped me out! Except Mo.
Thanks to everyone else though!
I listen to Hip-Hop and people say ‘Rap is crap,’ or ‘get better taste’ more often than sometimes. Nonetheless, I still love and listen to Hip-Hop because I ignore their opinions. If you enjoy listening to Teen-Pop, never stop and continue. Just remember people would always have both positive and negative opinions on your choice.

You like what you like. People want you to like what they like, so they cut you down.
One of the most important things is to know yourself and YOUR likes and dislikes, not other people’s preferences.
Ignore them.
Real music is all subjective.
Some people believe that if a musical piece requires more sophistication/technical ability, then it is automatically "better."
I think if the music touches people emotionally, then it is "better."
But, again, music is subjective.

Your just young baby girl and the music that you listen is for your enjoyment and not for the approval of others. But as you get older you will start to develope a politcal and social awareness that will change your preference in music. There is nothing wrong with the music that you are listening to it reflects who you are as a person now. But when you get older life will taken on a new meaning and the music you listen to will reflect this change. So when people say you don’t know what real music is, brush it off! Be happy and enjoy your youth

I understand how you feel about this, I went to the Celebrity section and had a perfectly good, polite yet strict, expression of my thoughts in the form of a question asking other people’s opinions – I got immediately bashed by Michael Jackson’s worshipers, got called " cruel/hater/demonic being " and my question got reported but fortunately for me,Yahoo accepted my appeal because they saw no violation to the community guidelines and they re-established my question back.
as for why this is happening – my theory is that : the distraction of the media is becoming overabundant yet dangerous – people are overly obsessed with modern music industry, singers are being represented in the images of the Divine and everybody will start adoring them as the brainwashed tools they are – if you’re not a singer but a doctor or a scientist who actually contributes to the better of the world, perhaps more than any singer – people will still be uncaring of your existence, it’s one thing to love a music or a certain singer but obsession is another.

I listen to a lot of music, mostly Hip-Hop, Ska, Reggae, and some rock. The thing about the Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus, they are what is IN right now for your generation. Every generation had them, i did to, i listened to that stuff when i was your age and you kind of grow out of it. Music to me is all about the lyrics now, people say it isn’t REAL music because its not REAL to them. If your listening to the Jonas brothers your not listening because their lyrics are so deep, its because they sing catchy songs and are trying to relate to your generation. So no wonder these 30 year old assholes with no life will make fun of you for listening to it, who cares what they think listen to what you want.
